The Art of Practice: 3 Fundamental Habits

A small core of productive habits can heavily alter your trajectory of improvement and natural growth towards your true uniquity.

  • Focus attention on your breathing.
  • Look away from your instrument to develop good posture, listening skills, and your sense of touch
  • Consistently follow through with every new concept you learn until fluent.

These three ideas allow for an in depth connection to the sound and flow of the instrument!

Focus attention on your breathing.

While experiencing a challenge, it is common to hold your breath. Be sure to consistently get a full breath, so you do not run out of fuel. It’s difficult to build stamina and maintain focus when you are oxygen deprived. **Frequently remove your hands from the instrument to reset and BREATHE(a tip from Effortless Mastery by Kenny Werner).**

Look away from your instrument to develop good posture, listening skills, and your sense of touch.

Relying only on the eyes to guide you distracts from listening. You will likely develop poor posture and neck pain when staring down at your instrument for extended periods of time.

Try using a blindfold in your practice if you want to get straight to the point.

You will be a more relaxed live performer when you are not looking down the whole time; which allows for a much better CONNECTION with the audience.

Consistently follow through with every new concept you learn until fluent.

Consistency is a key to success. Show up everyday and follow through with small goals.

In your next practice session, be sure to begin implementing these ideas. You will notice a new confidence, if you are patient!
